Nova for Windows can announce when a satellite rises above the horizon (AOS), reaches Time of Closest Approach (TCA), or sets below the horizon (LOS). Sound alarms are configured from the button in the Individual View Configuration screen for each View or from “Sound alarms for View” in the pop-up menu that appears when you right-click on a View.

This setup screen has three tabs at the top; each tab selects the settings for AOS, TCA, or LOS. If sound alarms are enabled for a particular event, the “speaker” image is highlighted next to the tab’s legend.

The drop-down boxes list all the WAV files that can be played as an initial sound when the satellite rises or sets. These files are included in the \sounds\noises folder where Nova for Windows is installed. A number of sound files are supplied; if you wish to add other sound (.WAV) files that can be used for this purpose, simply place them in the \sounds\noises folder and they will be listed in the boxes when this screen is displayed.

“Satellite name” sets whether the satellite name will be announced. In addition to this check box, an appropriate file for the satellite must also be present in the \Sounds\Satellites folder. Each satellite’s name should be present in a .WAV file. The files are accessed by means of the satellite’s catalog number. For example, Mir’s name is recorded in the file 16609.WAV and AO-10’s file is 14129.WAV. If a satellite does not have a corresponding WAV file, then no sound is made for its name.

You can easily record new sound alarm files by using the Sound Recorder included with Microsoft Windows or you can use the one built into Nova. You can launch Nova's sound recorder by clicking on the Record button. The Windows sound recorder can be found by clicking the Windows Start button and selecting Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Sound recorder. Be sure to save the files in the proper folder.

The time setting boxes define how long before AOS, TCA, or LOS the alarm will sound.

The Applies to… box defines what satellites will be announced. These selections apply only when sounds are being configured for a View. You can choose to announce only the 1st satellite in the list for each View, or all satellites in each View. In addition, you can announce sounds for all Observers or only the only the first Observer. This option is not available during Script Tracking.

Listen to the sound alarms by clicking on the button.
